Important: COVID Alert for Big Rock School

May 8, 2021

To our Big Rock School Community,

A case of COVID-19 has been diagnosed in an individual who was within Big Rock School.  As always, our thoughts remain with this individual and their family.  We wish them a safe and speedy recovery.

Out of respect to privacy and in accordance with AHS guidelines, we cannot disclose personal health information of any individual.  However, we are able to share that we learned of this positive COVID-19 case this afternoon, May 8, 2021.  We understand that the individual was last in the school on Wednesday May 5, 2021.

Please note the current transition to online learning remains in place.  The province has indicated a return to in-person learning will occur on Tuesday May 25, 2021.

Public Health, supported by Foothills School Division, has informed all individuals identified as being a close contact with this case.  The health and safety of our students, staff, and community is paramount.  We know this news can be distressing and support is available, you are encouraged to visit our Parent Learning Link, Student Learning Link, or review the resources available to support your family from the Calgary Rural Primary Care Network.

We remind families to monitor for any signs or symptoms of COVID-19 using the Alberta Health Daily Checklist.  If you or a member of your family has any of the symptoms of illness listed, please fill out the online Alberta Health Services COVID-19 self-assessment or call Health Link at 811.

In the past, we would notify a school community when a COVID-19 Variant of Concern (VOC) was identified within a school.  With the rise of the B.1.1.7 (UK) VOC across the province, Alberta Health Services has informed us that this notification will no longer be provided.  All other variants will continue to be shared.

Please rest assured that we will continue to work closely with Alberta Health Services and the Medical Officer of Health in the Calgary Zone to ensure that we follow their ongoing recommendations.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to your school principal or myself with any questions you may have.  Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Chris Fuzessy, Superintendent of Schools
Scott Carey, Big Rock School Principal
